A Letter from the Registrar
On November 16 and 17, the clergy and laity of this diocese will gather for the 8thSynod of the Diocese. Synod is the legislative body of the diocese that has the authority to adopt and amend our governing Constitution and Canons approve the budget and elect officers to diocesan committees.
On May 18, the 180-day notice for Synod, required by our Constitution and Canons, was sent out to all clergy and wardens. Included in that notice, was a letter from the Chair of our Nominations Committee and the Chair of our Constitution and Canons Committee.
The following are deadlines set out in our diocesan Canons:
July 19: Submissions for changes to the Constitution and Canons.
August 17: Congregation Lay delegate certification form is due
September 7: Nominations for diocesan positions: Standing Committee, Constitution and Canons Committee, Provincial Assembly, Youth delegates to Synod, Youth delegates to Provincial Assembly
At this year’s Synod we will be electing 4 members to the Standing Committee (2 clergy and 2 lay) to serve 3-year terms. In addition, 3 people will be elected to the Constitution Committee to serve 3-year terms and can be either clergy or Lay. This year we will also be electing our representatives to Provincial Assembly which will be held in Plano Texas, June 17-19, 2019. The number of delegates we have is determined by our diocese’s total ASA. This year we have six clergy, six lay and five youth delegates. Our delegates to Provincial Council are automatically delegates to Assembly so we will be electing five clergy and four lay delegates. The five youth delegates must be at least 16 and not older than 26 at the time the Assembly convenes. The diocese pays registration, accommodation and travel costs.
Download the candidate questionnaire here and is due Sept. 7th. The youth candidate questionnaire is here. Note: lay and youth nominations require their rector and warden’s endorsement.
Also, our canons also provide for 4 youth delegate positions at Synod. Youth delegates must be have full voice of vote of a delegate. Our Standing Committee appoints the youth delegates from the nominations received. Youth should be between 16-22. The candidate questionnaire is here if you or someone you know might be interested.
These positions and notices are important and necessary in the life of our church- but Synod is more than just “business.” It’s one of the few opportunities we have to gather for worship and fellowship as a diocese. There will be great music, bible teaching and breakout sessions on topics relevant to today and wonderful exhibits outlining the various missions in our diocese and the ACNA. So save the date and plan to come as our guest even if you are not a delegate or serving on a diocesan committee. You won’t be disappointed.
Registration will be online beginning in September but if you have any questions, please contact our registrar, Heather Adams (heather.adams@anglicandoma.org) or Lisa Anderson, our event coordinator (lisa.anderson@anglicandoma.org)
